Lucie Lelaurain

Lucie Lelaurain is a French multi-instrumentalist and composer with a particular fascination for modal music. In her work, she brings together musical traditions from different cultures and eras, creating distinctive and cinematic soundscapes.

Born in 1994 in the Auvergne region of France, Lucie grew up with a love of traditional music and dance. She began playing the transverse flute at the age of eight. Building on her classical musical background, she gradually developed a growing interest in the musical traditions of the Middle East.

After completing her studies at the conservatory in Toulouse, she moved to Istanbul, where she lived for two years, immersing herself in modal music. She studied with various masters and specialised in the Armenian duduk, a double-reed wind instrument. At the same time, she explored how the sounds, playing techniques and ornamentation of modal music could be adapted to her original instrument: the transverse flute.

Over the past eight years, Lucie has focused primarily on Armenian, Kurdish and Turkish musical traditions. More recently, she has also begun exploring Iranian music.

In her artistic work, Lucie constantly seeks to create a meeting point between tradition and experimentation. She is the co-founder of Hamraaz, a duo in which Iranian musical traditions meet original compositions. She also performs in various other ensembles, including the Nasin Trio.
